Spiritual Mapping
Spiritual mapping is an intercessory prayer
strategy that takes historical research and objective information gathering and combines
it with Spirit-led insights. Informed intercession is another way to describe the
basics of spiritual mapping.
As George Otis, Jr. of The Sentinel Group
states, "....Spiritual mapping [informed intercession] enables us to 'see' things
that were previously undetectable with our natural eyes....these veiled realities can
include repressed hurts (associated with unresolved injustices), spiritual pacts, and
demonic strongholds that daily hinder the advance of the gospel" (Informed
Intercession, pg. 81, by George Otis, Jr.).
Every community has spiritual roots,
history, and current activities that define the community, its people, and ultimately its
spiritual destiny. By discovering spiritual indicators from a variety of sources,
believers can seek God with humble repentant hearts. They can ask Him to forgive, redeem,
and restore their land according to 2 Chronicles 7:14: "If my people, who are
called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their
wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their
land."
The place of repentance is key to the
healing and restoring of your community. Keeping a clean and pure heart before the Lord is
critical to those who seek to pray on behalf of their communities. Given that pure heart,
there are many biblical examples of those who confessed and identified with sins that they
themselves did not commit. Ezra, Nehemiah, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Daniel all humbled
themselves before God and sought His mercy and forgiveness for the sins of their people
and nation. This is referred to as identificational repentance. Click here for a document on
identificational repentance.
If you have a heart to see revival and
transformation come to your community, PTM can help you with the basics of spiritual
mapping by providing tools, teaching, and consultation. We also recommend the book Informed
Intercession by George Otis, Jr., Regal Books. Other transformation resources can be
